I remember my very first cruise. I did everything there was to do. So much so that when I got home, I needed another week off. But seriously, I went to the evening performances every single night and was completely enthralled by the Vegas style entertainment at sea. That was many cruises and years ago.
Back then, they sang and danced to music from the 40’s and 50’s. Today it’s the music of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. It wasn’t long after that first cruise that those shows lost their luster for me. I mean really, how many times can you watch what is essentially the same show with different dancers and singers?
For any number of years, I managed to avoid them, though occasionally I cruised with a newbie and was dragged kicking and screaming on their behalf. It’s bad when you are on a cruise and sleeping is a better option. Thank goodness the entertainment is included, because no one would pay extra to watch. I guess the reason they don’t want any recording devices is that they don’t want to ruin the surprise for the one potential cruiser who hasn’t seen it or something like it.
Fast forward and they are still having those same performances today. Thank goodness most lines have evolved and now offer entertainment options like comedians, hypnotists and magicians. The question is, why do cruise lines continue to offer those stupid, stupid musical performances? Now it could be just me. I could be a jaded cruiser who has seen one too many of these. Maybe I cruise too often. But it seems that every time there’s nothing going on, out comes the musical performances where the singing and dancing is at best marginal and honestly, if it were on TV and I were home, I would turn it off.
Surely with a little imagination, they can expand to some new and usual acts to fill whatever void removing these shows might bring.
For my money, life is too short to have to suffer through another of these mindless productions.
